“Co-creating Mosquito-Free Hospitals,” a video abstract by MBD-Free PhD researcher Otis Sloan Wood, has won second place in the Buildings & Cities 2025 Video Challenge, an international competition celebrating innovative research communication through film.

The winning video highlights the co-creation process behind the Mosquito Borne Disease-Free Hospitals (MBD-Free) project, demonstrating how collaborative design can improve public health environments and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne disease transmission in hospitals.

“Seeing journals like Buildings & Cities showcase film as a medium to communicate the complexities of the built environment feels genuinely encouraging and it is a pleasure to contribute,” said Sloan Wood on a post, reflecting on the achievement.

Sloan Wood also shared what inspired his interest in using film to communicate architecture.

“The first time I realised how powerful DIY film could be in communicating architecture was when I saw a short YouTube documentary about Peter Zumthor’s Thermal Baths in Vals nearly 10 years ago. It demonstrated how film could bring us closer to how the built environment is experienced everyday, and sparked a lasting enthusiasm for experimenting with film and architecture,” explains Sloan Wood.

The video was chosen for its powerful storytelling, visual clarity, and compelling demonstration of how co-design can transform healthcare spaces.
